2005 GMC Canyon
Date of Review: Feb 28, 2007
The Bottom Line: I wouldn't recommend the vehicle. I does have issues that could likely be corrected but the bigger problem to me is GM's unwillingness to deal with the problems properly.
It might be hard to tell from this review but I do like the truck. This vehicle seems to have more problems than it should though. I have been partial to GM vehicles for the past 25 years, however I am finding that GM apparently believes that the amount of problems that this vehicle has is acceptable. My brand loyalty is fading. Following are some of the problems I'm having with the vehicle.
Excessive front tire wear: Cupping occurs either on inside or outside edges of tires. Rotating isn't useful because the fronts wear faster than they can even out on the rear. After a couple of alignments and buying me one set of cheap replacements for the front, the dealer said they wouldn't do anything else unless GM told them to. Apparently meets GM standards.
Air Conditioning: Air blows cold for a few seconds then warms. The compressor cycles on/off within 20-30 seconds. Cab never cools properly and also feels humid. The first time I took it in for this problem, the technician told me that he added refrigerant but it still worked the same. He then tested another one off the lot and it did the same thing. The next time I reported that the compressor seemed to be short cycling. When the service advisor was going to schedule me in, I asked that he check for service bulletins first. A day or so later he called to say they'd found a bulletin. After ordering and receiving parts, they kept if for about a week to strip the dash (everything between the steering wheel to the firewall) out to replace or move a sensor in the duct. This helped but did cure the problem.
Rough Idle/Miss: GM apparently recommends toying with this for part of the day before advising the dealer to replace the valve springs. They don't stock valve springs even though they know they could be bad. When the valve springs are finally received, and it is determined that they didn't fix the problem, GM recommends replacing the entire cylinder head. They don't stock these either. Once the cylinder head is received they find that it is not shipped with bolts. You got it, no bolts in stock either. I'm on my third week in a rental now.
Cab to Box Alignment: The box isn't directly behind the cab. I didn't ask them to fix this because I was more concerned about the above problems. I wish I would have made issue of it now. It adds some road noise and makes fitting a canopy difficult.
