PNY, headquartered in Parsippany, NJ, is a massive company with international offices in Europe and Asia. Established in 1985, PNY Technologies manufacturers products in and around computers. You might find the PNY name on: graphic accelerator cards, graphics boards, memory upgrades, flash media, flash media readers, or USB flash drives.
I purchased a 2 GB SD flash memory card for my Lumix camera because it was on sale at BJ’s for what I thought was a good price. At the time I knew nothing about PNY.
There are many types of memory cards used in cameras. The type you use is determined by which camera you own. My present camera uses SD memory; the previous camera used Memory Sticks, and the one before that used Smart Media. SD cards seem to have the most widespread applications. Prices continue to fall for flash media. A year ago I don’t think you could touch a card of this size for the 17 dollars I paid for this one.
This is the largest regular SD card my camera will accept. The camera’s owner’s manual states that any card larger must be SDHC. According to the chart on the back of the memory card’s package, in my 8 megapixel camera, this PNY card may hold up to 600 photos. A one GB card in the same cameral might hold 296 photos, while a 4 GB card might hold 1198. In a five-megapixel camera, this 2GB card might hold over a thousand pictures! For my purposes a 2GB card should have more than enough memory.
If I ever want to take advantage of my camera’s movie making capacity, I might want a larger card in the future.
The PNY card measures about 1 by 1.25 inches, a diminutive size easy to lose if one is not careful. It can be used to store images, videos, and music for digital cameras, MP3’s, PDA’s, digital picture frames, and other digital devices. A large capacity card kept permanently in a memory card reader, could be used as a portable flash drive for transferring data.
PNY backs this card with a lifetime warranty. Save your receipt. I didn’t save mine though. Visit the PNY site for warranty details.
On the back of the package is an 800 number for free technical support from PNY.
So far this PNY memory card was worked flawlessly for me. Since I prefer not to drag out wires and use my camera’s battery for picture transfer to the computer, I frequently remove this SD card from the camera and use it with a SanDisk memory card reader.
The little PNY SD card slides in and out of the camera smoothly and likewise in and out of the card reader. The transfer speed of photographs has been surprisingly faster than that with the memory stick. I can’t be sure if this is because of the card reader or the SD media itself.
I’ve been pleased with the performance of this card and wouldn’t hesitate buying another PNY product. If circumstances change, I’ll update this review.
