Author's Review
Did you ever have one of those days when you just want to plug in a movie that makes you laugh, without being concerned with deep plot twists and involved characters? Then this is the one! Pearl Harbor is fresh in everyone's mind, and they are geared up to protect the California coast from invaders, who just happen to show up in the form of a Japanese sub. The all-star cast (think what this film would cost to make today!) of army misfits manages to destroy just about everything around them, including an amuzement park, sea-side home, and downtown district. If you leave your need for a thinking-man's movie aside, and just enjoy what is on the screen, this is a fun movie for every member of the family.
Besides Beatty, Aykroyd, and Belushi, this film features such future stars as John Candy, and past stars as Slim Pickens. When Beatty decides to use the army gun left at his home to blow the sub out of the water, you just know the house is history. How it is destroyed is classic. Where else can you find a film that features a ferris wheel rolling down a long peir into the ocean? (complete with two lookouts and a wood dummy?) Belushi is at his classic best as the fighter pilot who hasn't a clue.
I recommend popping a bowl of popcorn, popping in the movie, and just letting your self relax and enjoy an hour of silliness!
