Author's Review
Because ..."My heart is full, my heart is wide..."
Moby. Let me see what can I say about him...
Well first off, I have heard some of Mody's songs in the past. I really have never given Moby a fair listening. Sure I heard that song that he did with Gwen Stephani. What was the song called? Oh yea, "Southside". Right? But I don't like No Doubt. Nope.
This time I decided to give Moby a chance because he was working with one of my favorite artist, Sinead O'Connor. She sings on a song called "Harbour" (track 15). The opening line to this review, the quote, is from this song.
Ofcourse this is the first song I listened to from this album. I haven't even heard of the first single "We Are All Made of Stars" until I listened to the album. The first time I listened to "Harhour" I really didn't like it. I wasn't sure if I liked Sinead's vocals, which is odd. After a few listens to the song I have come to the conclusion that it is a beautiful song. Beautiful.
A few days after I had purchased the album I decided to listen to the album in full. I sat down to do some of my fashion patterns. I popped in the cd, put it on shuffle, and listened. As the album unfolded so did my curiousity towards this artist, Moby. This album was full of GREAT tunes. I had knew, kind of, that Moby was an electronic artist but I was never sure what kind. I actually thought techno or something like that. VERY DIFFERENT. Well, I should say its not techno. Actually very mellow. Thats ok too, NOT a techno fanatic here myself.
So anyway, onto the album.
I know that artists place songs in specific orders to create a mood or something. I listened to it on shuffle because I wanted to capture something different. I did...
I have learned that Moby has a very soothing voice. It is actually quite nice. From the other reviews they have said that he sings more now, on this album. Thats great!
The first single, "We Are All Made of Stars". This is actually a very nice tune. Kind of floats into its own dream. Moby enhances the song by singing it himself. Though some may think the lyrics are a little repetitive, I certainly don't think so. I like its repetitiveness. Besides many who listen to techno or electronic shouldn't mind the repetitiveness because the majority of electronic, if I'm correct and I'm ignorant when it comes to electronic music, is repetition. Infact, this is not the only song that lack lyrics, many of the songs has very little lyrics but thats ok because Moby is mainly an instrumental artist. If you would like to know more about how he writes, read his essays. He includes two in the sleeve and check out his website. From what he says, he writes essays on that everyday!
Moby sings on "Signs of Love", "Extreme Ways", "Sleep Alone", and the first single "We Are All Made of Stars". ALL good songs.
The song, "Sunday (the day before my birthday)"
Repeats
"Sunday was a bad day, yesterday
Dark clouds is come into the way..."
in this mysterious breathy vocal, that makes you think of your Sunday. Makes you wonder what happened to you on that day. Very nice song full of soft keyboards and strings.
"At Least We Tried". I can see Ally McBeal sitting at her window seal looking out onto the street watching Larry (Robert Downy Jr) walking away while a few candles are making a nice reflection on the window. Infact, I can see myself in her place listening to this song on repeat. Sad song but Perfect "break up" song.
"Oh my baby, don't cry
Oh my babe, just say goodbye
Oh now baby, don't cry
Oh my baby, atleast we tried
atleast we tried, to make it..."
Again, the vocals are breathy and fits the moody perfectly.
There are a few songs that are kind of spiritual. "In This World" and "In My Heart" are two. This spiritualness comes from Moby being and used to being a religious person. Songs aren't overbearing but very nice.
Some say, Moby produced nothing new on this album but hey I don't know Moby all that well so this album sounds good to me. Besides does it have to be NEW sounding material to be good? No.
On this album Moby touches from religion, self awareness, heartbreak, and just thoughts. Album even contains just musical pieces. This is a very soothing peacful album. He is a New Yorker and from what happened on Sept. 11th this is the perfect peaceful quiet album that should become part of everyones muscial collection.
