Donkey Konga is a Nintendo GAME CUBE video game that comes with a free pair of bongo drums. The drums are plastic and there are two drum surfaces, one for each hand. There is a built in microphone that registers Hand Clapping during the game. The point of the game is to play the bongos and clap your hands in beat with the many songs available.
I bought Donkey Konga a few days ago, and I have to tell you once I found out about this game I couldn't wait to get out of work and rush to buy it!
I paid $49.99 at Best Buy and bought and extra set of Bongos for $29.99 (also at best buy).
You replace your typical game cube controller for one of these bongos (note: that you can use a standard Game Cube controller to play this game; it's just not nearly as fun). You can use up to 4 bongos. You should also have a memory card installed, this will allow you to open new songs, advance to higher levels and open new sub games; I haven't been able to get to this because I don't have a memory card!
First you pick how many players; there can be any mix of bongos controllers and standard controllers to play, up to 4. Then you can play one at a time or in sync, so that everyone playing will have a part to make the song work. Points are kept and rate a particular note you play as Great, OK, or Bad. At the end of the game it tally's the hits and misses to give you a score.
Icons float from right to left on the screen and lets you know when to hit the right bongo, left bongo, both bongos or clap.
I bought this game with my 3 year old in mind, and sure enough he loves to tap those bongos. However, he is just too young to score high as at 3 years old, cannot play in beat with the music. But its fun just to watch him try!
I played this with my wife and she just loves it. The song selection is good. They have classical music, Rock, pop, Latin music, even rap. All the music in the game is well known (B52's, Carlos Santana, etc.)
As far as I know this is the only game that can use these bongo controllers. Look out for Donkey Konga Jungle Beat coming out fist quarter 2005.
I should have bought real bongos for my son instead of spending almost $90 for this set. Older kids and adults however, will have a blast playing this.
