Beware
Date of Review: Nov 24, 2004
The Bottom Line: Be aware of the return policy wherever this game is purchased. Your PC may regret crossing paths with this game.
I bought Chessmaster 10th edition simply because it was the newest and I had been wanting to learn to play the game at for a long time.
It has a lot of bells and whistles--choice of chess sets, tutorials, commentary, etc. The menus, however, cause an ENORMOUS amount of clutter on the desktop, moving pieces with the mouse can be annoying because the "hand" moves pieces differently depending on the set you are using.
Now, the BIG problem. According to other opinion sites, people who have bought this program say it is copy protected to a fault-- several faults. For one thing, you cannot play the game without a CD in the drive, even if it is completely installed. And your computer better not have any type of clone software installed.
For me, some time after installing and playing, the program began continuously requesting a CD be inserted when there was a CD in the drive. After that, the message changed, requesting the "right" CD be put in.
This problem has been ongoing for a couple of weeks now and no matter what CD is placed in the drive, this game will not work smoothly and causes endless frustration and gnashing of teeth. Now our computer refuses to reboot after turning it off in frustration--with the CD in.
Unfortunately, Best Buy will not exchange it for something else. Only the same title.
