Product Description

The Communist Manifesto, drafted on the eve of the 1848 revolutions, is the most brilliant and incisive political text ever written; a work of great literary power as well as historical insight. It is presented here by Eric Hobsbawm, whose writing has brilliantly described the century and a half of history which has been both shaped and illuminated by the Manifesto. As the 'age of extremes' draws to an end and capitalism seems everywhere to be triumphant, as it did one hundred and fifty years ago, Eric Hobsbawm critically appraises a work which, he argues, is now more timely than ever. Hobsbawm notes the curious fact that the Manifesto remained a subterranean text for many decades and did not circulate on a mass scale, or achieve a canonical status, until comparatively recently. He argues that only the complete unfolding of capitalism on a global scale in recent times allows us to take the full measure of Marx and Engels's truly astounding mixture of passion, science and poetry.

The Bible of Communism

Date of Review:  Jun 3, 2002
The Bottom Line: This book, although undeniably flawed in its conclusions and predictions, remains a classic volume of economic and political thought.
Review: Karl Marx is a man whose name invokes strong emotions in people, ranging from cautious curiosity to outright loathing for the political theory that he introduced to the world. This German- born political and economic philosopher wrote many books in...

The Bottom Line: Everyone should read it. Just be preapared to skim more than a few long winded pages.
Review: In the whole course of Human History, only a few books of political and economic thought can be said to have been truly influential. Plato's Republic, Hobbe's Leviathan, Locke's Treatises…all of these books in one war or another have...

A Different Approach

Review: Karl Marx changed the world when he and Friedrich Engels wrote this tract. The Communist Manifesto is an unbiased telling of the aims and beliefs of the communist party. The authors write with such skill and tact never letting it show that they are...

Paperback, The Communist Manifesto: A Modern Edition
Originally published on the eve of the 1848 European revolutions, "The Communist Manifesto" is a condensed and incisive account of the worldview Marx and Engels developed during their hectic intellectual and political collaboration. Formulating the principles of dialectical materialism, they believed that labor creates wealth, hence capitalism is exploitive and antithetical to freedom. This new edition includes an extensive introduction by Gareth Stedman Jones, Britain's leading expert on Marx and Marxism, providing a complete course for students of "The Communist Manifesto," and demonstrating not only the historical importance of the text, but also its place in the world today.
