A quality fictional read.

Date of Review:  Aug 26, 2001
The Bottom Line: This fictional historical book is worth more than a read, due to it's engaging characterization and winning prose. You won't be disappointed, if you have a thinking critical mind.
Review: In the movie Gladiator, Russell Crowe plays a fictional general that became a slave. While the movie is gorgeously filmed and finely acted by Phoenix and Crowe, it's completely fantastical ending ruined it for many historical buffs. Because of that...

Denying the Truth

Date of Review:  Jun 20, 2000
Review: Why is a novel that won a Pulitzer Prize in 1967 on my "Hate" list? Author Styron has no question about the important presence his novel has; he states that he is giving readers a fictional presentation of the actual history surrounding our title...

Nat Turner is a true American Hero we just have to see beyond the lies.

Date of Review:  Nov 18, 2009
Review: An avid reader I am fasicinated by history. This book give accounts of not only the horrendous things Nat did, but also shows that what the whites did after and even before was even more horrible. And these were the people calling him a "monster."...

Professional Reviews

New York Review of Books: "This is a first-rate novel...and the best by an American writer that has appeared in some years...Styron maintains throughout his narrative a consistent and highly imaginative realism not only on the object plane, but also by recreating the intimate psychology of his characters...In a way inconceivable, even for Faulkner, Styron's prose master."

In the late summer of 1831, in a remote section of southeastern Virginia, there took place the only effective, sustained revolt in the annals of American Negro slavery...The revolt was led by a remarkable Negro preacher named Nat Turner, an educated slave who felt himself divinely ordained to annihilate all the white people in the region. The Confessions of Nat Turner is narrated by Nat himself as he lingers in jail through the cold autumnal days before his execution.
