'The Thief Lord' will steal your heart, but not completely

Date of Review:  Apr 17, 2003
The Bottom Line: A captivating story that is a bit too Disney-ish for my tastes.
Review: Take a dash of Charles Dickens, a smattering of Ray Bradbury, and mix them together in one of the most romanticized cities in the world. What do you get? Cornelia Funke's The Thief Lord.

If you believe the gushing masses, this is the next...

Date of Review:  May 30, 2006
The Bottom Line: My kid has better books than me.
Review: The world of orphans and orphanages has supplied literature with bountiful material over the centuries. Those wee ones left to fend for themselves in what is often a harsh world never fails to tug at the heartstrings, or provide a suspenseful tale,...

Date of Review:  Nov 7, 2002
The Bottom Line: Entertaining and spirited book will amuse children, but you may want to have a talk with them afterward about the lawless protagonists.
Review: I'm noticing a weird trend in my reading patterns. When I was a kid, I always went for the "adult" books, the ones that were supposedly too grown-up for me to understand. Now that I'm an adult, I'm fleeing the Fiction & Literature shelves and taking...

5/5 stars
The Thief Lord is a very interesting book. It's set in Venice, Italy, and follows around two orphan boys who have run away from their cruel aunt. They are accepted into a band of young thieves led by the Thief Lord. Pros: Good size., Interesting plot twists. Cons: Gets a little confusing/hard to follow at the end.

Professional Reviews

New York Times Book Review: "Adults who have left their own childhoods too far behind may worry that a book aggrandizing thievery and condoning lying is inappropriate for unformed minds. They should relax. The lies are mostly white and receive their just deserts in the end. And, without piety, the children themselves work thorough the ethics of money and power, of stealing for survival versus stealing out of greed....[a] splendid novel."

First Line

It was autumn in Venice when Victor first heard of Prosper and Bo. The canals, gleaming in the sun, dappled the ancient brickwork with gold. But the wind was blowing ice-cold air from the sea, reminding Venetians that winter was approaching.
