Víctor Hugo achieved, in "The man who laughs", one of the most personal novels, as well as one of the most dramatic stories of the entire literature. His protagonist is a boy kidnapped by children stealers who have deformed his face in such a way that it shows a permanent smile, independently of how his feeling are. After a life of adventures, he manages to recover his rights, but when in use of them he throws a brilliant piece of oratory to describe the sufferings of others, his deformed face makes believe that he is telling a joke and everybody laugh at him. It is a vital work along its violence and many consider it to be Víctor Hugo's masterpiece, even if "The hunchback" and "The miserables" are more known.

The Bottom Line: "The Man Who Laughs" is Victor Hugo's greatest work. The Paper Tiger edition is the only one available new today, and is worth the high price tag.
