Product Description

Ingmar Bergman has stated that THE MAGIC FLUTE had long since been an inspiration to him by the time he directed this movie version of an actual staging of Mozart's opera. In Emanuel Schikaneder's libretto--performed here in Swedish instead of German--Prince Tamino (Josef Kvstlinger) is sent by the mysterious and powerful Queen of the Night (Birgit Nordin) to rescue her daughter, Pamina (Irma Urrila), from the sorcerer Sarastro (Ulrik Cold), who has kidnapped the girl. Tamino is aided on his mission by the bird catcher Papageno (Hekan Hagegerd), an endearing buffoon (and arguably the opera's most popular character) who wants nothing more than to find himself a loving wife. The director presents a shortened version of the story, enhanced with a Freudian plot element (of sorts), while also giving the piece a slight overhaul for a more modern, less politically questionable feel. Bergman shows the goings-on onstage, often zooming in for close-ups of the performers' interaction with one another, interspersed ...

Love Would Heal the Nations

Date of Review:  Dec 5, 2005
The Bottom Line: Bergman's direction of this opera performance is both skillful and distinctive and the performance values are mostly excellent.
Review: Concluding my yearlong, once-a-month series of reviews of filmed operas, I offer here one of the most distinctive cinematic renditions of opera, courtesy of the great Ingmar Bergman. It is sometimes referred to as "the finest screen version of an...

The Magic Flute of Sweden

Date of Review:  Jul 26, 2004
The Bottom Line: Even after 25 years, this film holds up as a great cinematic opera experience.
Review: My 5 year old daughter has been singing for 6 hours straight now and this movie is the reason why. Ingmar Bergman's "Trollflojten" (please umlaut the o) is often described as the best film ever made of an opera. It's style of filmmaking doesn't seem...

Film-Opera DVD - Music and cinema come together in the most brilliant -- and accessible -- cinematic adaptation of an opera ever made. Performed by singers who can act as well as vocalize, Ingmar Bergman's richly textured version of Mozart's The Magic Flute is a beautifully staged mixture of fairy tale and Masonic allegory that captures all of the opera's drama, humor, romance, and underlying philosophy. In the original libretto a sorcerer kidnaps Pamina, daughter of the Queen of the Night, and handsome Prince Tamino sets out to rescue her with the promised reward of her hand in marriage. Bergman makes cuts to the text and score and adds his own inventive plot points, such as turning the queen and the sorcerer into a divorced couple. Sven Nykvist, Bergman's longtime cinematographer, works visual marvels, using subtle light and shade to infuse each scene with an otherworldly atmosphere. The film was shot in Stockholm's Drottningholm Theatre in the presence of an enraptured audience, and the close-ups of deligh
