Product Description

As Germany was threatening to become the world's most powerful nation, it became clear that England would have to act to save Europe from the Nazi threat. Winston Churchill is widely recognized as the man who led England in this charge, but the prominent politician and energizing speaker had to pull himself up from a low point to lead his compatriots. Churchill was in the midst of a marital crisis, had lost his family fortune, and was struggling through a morbid depression. Battling his own demons, he was able to stand up and loudly warn about the Nazi party's intentions and actions. This made-for-cable feature stars Albert Finney as the defiant Churchill, remaking a 1974 film of the same name starring Richard Burton.

Date of Review:  Jan 26, 2003
The Bottom Line: Well done historical drama that captures the essence one of history's most memorable characters
Review: Taking it's title from the first volume of Winston Churchill's history of World War II, The Gathering Storm is a lavishly produced, Tour de Force that captures an intriguing period in the life of one of history's most celebrated figures. This HBO...

I see a little too much of Albert Finney's Churchill in HBO's "The Gathering Storm"

Date of Review:  Apr 25, 2006
The Bottom Line: A wonderful biopic from HBO.
Review: Even though I'm a history teacher, there are some big blind spots in my knowledge of history because 1) I've only been a history teacher for two years now, and 2) I've had a lot of incompetent teachers myself. One of those blind spots is Winston...

The Bottom Line: As far as historical drama goes, this is about as good as it gets.

Biographical Feature DVD - Today, Winston Churchill is regarded as one of the great leaders of his time, and a hero for helping to guide Great Britain through the crises of World War II. But in the 1930s, Churchill's place in history hardly seemed assured; his early warnings against the growing threat of the Third Reich were taken seriously by few of his contemporaries, and he suffered through a variety of personal, professional, and economic setbacks before German attacks on England gave credence to his theories about Hitler's desire to overtake Europe, and gave Churchill the opportunity to rise to the greatness that was his destiny. The Gathering Storm is a made-for-televisio n biographical drama based on Churchill's memoirs about his life leading up to World War II. Albert Finney stars as Winston Churchill, Vanessa Redgrave plays his wife, Clementine, and Derek Jacobi appears as Stanley Baldwin. Jim Broadbent and Ronnie Barker co-star. Produced for the BBC, The Gathering Storm received its American premier
