Product Description

An epic television mini-series, this 1969 BBC production was followed by audiences for one half of a television season of American public television series and essentially saved the fledgling Public Broadcasting System. The literary adaptation follows the Victorian pride of the Forsyte family through the scandals and mistakes of the patriarch, Soames (Eric Porter). His ways change when he has a child who grows up to be a captivating young woman (Susan Hampshire) who carries on the family tradition. Based on James Galworthy's Nobel Prize winner.

MOVIE DVD - Long before American TV's Dallas, there was The Forsyte Saga, the British serial that took England and the world by storm in 1966-67. "Saga" is the right word for this, too, as the series is told in 26 hour-long episodes that follow the lives and loves of the moneyed Forsyte clan over more than four decades. The story begins in 1879, centering on two cousins, Soames (Eric Porter) and Jo (Kenneth More), and the feud that develops between them over the beautiful pianist Irene (Nyree Dawn Porter). The second half follows their children Fleur (Susan Hampshire) and John as the feud continues into the 1920s. The Forsyte Saga was based on a series of novels written by John Galsworthy in the early 20th century, and while Galsworthy earned a Nobel Prize in recognition of these (and other) works, they play in this adaptation as pure soap opera, and spectacularly at that. Don't expect high production values, as each episode was turned out on a two-week production schedule. Yet the characters and performances

The miniseries that started it all! In 1969, a internationally- acclaimed BBC show began airing on the fledgling public broadcasting network. "The Forsyte Saga," in telling the remarkable story of a nouveau riche English family, introduced America to a new kind of TV. Millions of Americans devoted the next half year of their lives to following the frank treatment of all sins, foibles and peccadillos of the Forsytes and their circle. The passing decades can never erase the memory of their extraordinary evenings with the Forsytes: Kenneth More as Jo, the philosophical outsider; Eric Porter as Soames, the grasping man of property; Nyree Dawn Porter as Irene, "born to be loved and to love" and in later episodes, Susan Hampshire in an Emmy-winning performance as Fleur, Soames's "restless" daughter. The series was so popular that Masterpiece Theatre was created to meet the new demand for great literary adaptations. With 150 characters, 2000 separate costumes and over 100 sets, this sprawling yet intimate saga ...
