The Color of Water: Growing Up Bi- Racial in a Strong, Closely Knit Family

Date of Review:  Oct 18, 2006
The Bottom Line: This is a very good book about a man and the mother who shaped his life.
Review: Racial tensions have plagued society for ages and it is common today to still find individuals who won't let go of their prejudicial views. In the modern world, racism is basically under control and it is common to find interracial couples and other...

The Color of Water - When your dad is black and your mom is white.

Date of Review:  Jun 24, 2001
The Bottom Line: This is a fascinating nonfiction book about a mixed race (black/Jewish) family built during the 1940s. It will make you laugh, cry, and think.
Review: The schools in this area were integrated the year before I entered first grade. I remember faintly that some community members were very upset about integration, but I never understood why skin color set people apart.

Of course, I did see...

The Color Of Water: Colorful Stories (Black History Month Write-Off)

Date of Review:  Feb 18, 2001
The Bottom Line: A quick read which will leave you wanting an update on the extraordinary lives of some ordinary people.
Review: As I stood on the Manhattan subway platform, I watched as a tall, dreadlocked black man prepared to play his steel drum for the throngs of tourists and commuters at the 34th Street Station. Not more than twenty feet away a young Hassidic man dressed...

Professional Reviews

"James McBride's efforts in re-creating his mother's life deserve much praise and merit. From his personal vantage point, we come to realize how serious our country's "racial cancer" really is; and the indisputable possibilities for survival....However, more captivating is what's written between the lines. For James, who craved to know his ethnic roots, inadvertently discovered the complexities of the human will and the courage manifested in the will to survive. He also discovered that along the cruel path that life bestowed upon them, the world that Ruth McBride Jordan built for her twelve children, with no money and no skills, became the difference between success and failure. 'The Color of Water' is in reality one woman's triumph over adversity and devastation."

As a boy, I never knew where my mother was from--where she was born, who her parents were. When I asked she'd say, "God made me."
