Product Description

Four thousand years ago, a stranger's death and his ominous "gift" of gold precipitates the building of what will become known as one of mankind's most remarkable achievements. Stonehenge catapults us into a powerful and vibrant world of ritual and sacrifice at once timeless and wholly original. This is an epic tale of patricide, betrayal, and murder; of brotherly rivalry; and of the never-ending quest for power, wealth, and spiritual fulfillment.

Three brothers, rivals, are uneasily united in their quest to create a temple to their gods. Cornwell's re-creation of civilization as it might have been in 2000 B.C. amplifies the mystery of his subject and makes the world of Stonehenge come alive as never before.

Stonehenge Six Questions

Date of Review:  Apr 7, 2002
The Bottom Line: Bernard Cornwell delivers. The Stonehenge edifice in Britain is a mystery. There are no written records of its creation. Cornwell presents a compelling hypothesis that just might explain it.
Review: I have weaved my way through the dull gray rock ring that is Stonehenge. That day was cold and unwelcoming. A stiff breeze propelled the raindrops against my face like so many flying needles. Part of me ? the cold, wet part ? simply wanted to leave...

Stonehenge - What does a god need for a temple?

Date of Review:  Dec 12, 2000
Review: Somewhere around 2000 BC, the world-famous landmark, Stonehenge, was erected in what is now known as England. This was, at the time, the beginning of England?s Bronze Age, and there are few if any written records from that era.

Who Wants To Read About a Happy Guy?

Date of Review:  Jun 11, 2000
The Bottom Line: Fantastic if you want something long and involving. I like long and involving.
Review: I didn't make it to Stonehenge on my only (thus far) visit to England however I did visit at least 20 other megalithic sites in Wales and Ireland and not once did I stand thinking 'what kind of personal hell did these builders go through while...

Professional Reviews

Porter, Michael, New York Times Book Review: "Combining informed conjecture with the story of a savage family whose treachery makes the Sopranos look tame by comparison, Bernard Cornwell has written a diverting novel that imagines the history behind Stonehenge....In the end, the book is more likely to appeal to fans of J.R.R. Tolkein than of David Macaulay."
