Product Description

Included here are poems about the tie to the mother, about Miriam, about the trauma of the mother's lingering mortal illness, and about the poignant aftermath of her death during which the son suffered self-abandonment to grief and a sense of desolation described in the novel as a nuit blanche or 'white night.'

Mommy and the Modern World

Date of Review:  Apr 14, 2002
The Bottom Line: A captivating portrait of the artist story full of vivid descriptive passages and a skillful, poetic use of the English language.
Review: There's this guy named Paul Morel; yeah, like the mushroom. He thinks he hates his father who works in the coal mines, and thinks he loves his mother who does a pretty thorough job of nagging his father, while stifling Paul. Poor Paul is in love...

Gross, John: "...'Sons and Lovers', the book in which he found himself, is also the best of his books to start with. It has its faults, but there isn't a page that doesn't pulsate with life."
