Product Description

Oliver Stone's first overtly political film, SALVADOR is a passionate protest against the savagery unleashed by fascist thugs in El Salvador during the early 1980s with the complicity of the U.S. government. It stars James Woods as combat photojournalist Richard Boyle, an erratic, cynical character with a taste for all things chemical. Hearing rumors of war, he and Dr. Rock (Jim Belushi), another free spirit, head for El Salvador by car. After viewing a right-wing officer's collection of severed ears and photographing a corpse-strewn garbage dump with ace photographer John Cassady (John Savage), Boyle realizes that the situation is much worse than advertised in the American press. He recognizes familiar faces among the ubiquitous U.S. military brass and CIA personnel from his stint in Vietnam, but they're predictably reluctant to discuss the reasons for their presence, especially with the outrageous Boyle. As the journalist becomes involved with a Salvadoran native named Maria (Elpedia Carrillo) and obse...

Dark Days In Central America

Date of Review:  Jul 1, 2001
The Bottom Line: For fans of Oliver Stone, this is the best work he has ever put in. "Salvador" is the under-rated masterpiece that should have won Best Picture.
Review: Anyone who has seen an Oliver Stone picture in the last two decades, has a fairly rough idea of this man's image and style. Raw, gritty, and uncompromisingly clear in his portrayal of human suffering, Stone is to many a film god. What's surprising...

Review: It's flawed and nearly self-destructs, but remains a harrowing, powerful, in your face testosterone fueled film with some fine performances. It's Stone's best film.

Oliver Stone got into the car and pressed hard on the gas pedal. He doesn't...

Guerilla Cinema

Date of Review:  Jul 22, 2008
The Bottom Line: Well worth seeing
Review: Oliver Stone's Salvador is a film that in many ways represents what a politically turbulent time the 1980's was, and just how radical and daring cinema could be back then.

Salvador is a view of the 1980-81 period in El Savador seen from...

Nominated for two Oscars, this gripping (Newsweek), semi- autobiographical account of photojournalist Richard Boyle s experiences in war-torn El Salvador has a power you can feel (Hollywood Reporter) and is a maddeningly involving experience (Boxoffice Magazine)! James Woods gives his fullest, most humane, most emotional performance (New York Magazine) to date in this gritty, harrowing and bold thriller (Gannett Newspapers) co-written by director Oliver Stone and Boyle. It s 1980. Young men, women and children are being brutally killed in a bloody civil war in El Salvador. It s a horrific setting...but a perfect one for Richard Boyle, a sleazy war photojournalist whose career needs a jumpstart. Armed with his camera, Boyle joins the dangerous front lines in an attempt to capture the atrocious-but-valu able images of the pain and horror. But with each picture he takes, he catches a tragic side of humanity that ignites his long-buried compassion. And as he endangers his own life to save the helpless people he s gr
