Product Description

For his 27th film, the "sensei" of Japanese cinema, Akira Kurosawa, transposes Shakespeare's KING LEAR to feudal Japan. RAN, which translates as "chaos" or "turmoil," is the tragic tale of Lord Hidetora, a warlord who decides to divide his empire among his three sons on the eve of his 70th birthday. However, Hidetora's youngest and most compassionate son, Saburo, defiantly objects to this hasty decision and is disowned by the proud, stubborn ruler. Once the two eldest sons take control of the empire, they quickly turn on their father and begin vying for total control over the land. Movie Review: Akira Kurosawa's Ran (1985)

Date of Review:  Mar 9, 2009
The Bottom Line: Highly Recommended: One of Akira Kurosawa's greatest achievements. Intriguing tale of treachery amid stunning visual effects.
Review: There are few more prolific and masterful directors in the history of cinema than Japan’s Akira Kurosawa. But while most of his legacy was built around the 1950’s and early 60’s, subsequent years would be something of a struggle for him as it was...

The Poetry of Three Arrows: Akira Kurosawa's "Ran"

Date of Review:  Jun 25, 2001
The Bottom Line: Akira Kurosawa makes Shakespeare both accessible and beautiful in this stunning adaptation of "King Lear."
Review:
Akira Kurosawa's masterpiece, the crowning gem in a career dedicated to the creation of crowning gems, is his 1985 epic, Ran. It is a film whose merits are difficult to communicate with words, for these mere units of language are unable to...
