Product Description

When a Lubavitcher Jew from Brooklyn moves to Postville, Iowa, the townspeople welcome his business, a slaughterhouse that renews the economy of the area. But when Lubavitchers relocate in numbers, and power begins to shift in the community, resentment arises among the older residents, who eventually take strong measures after accusations arise about unfair labor practices at the slaughterhouse.

Postville: A Clash of Cultures in Heartland America

Date of Review:  Sep 13, 2002
The Bottom Line: Is one's life ruled by genetics or choices made? Author explores the pull of his Jewish heritage. And the battle of two cultures for control of a small Iowa town.
Review: "With little fanfare, a hardy band of Hasidic Jews had transformed Postville, a stagnant community that had held little future for its next generation, into what at first seemed like a Promised Land. In 1987, a Brooklyn butcher by the name of Aaron...

Postville ? Clash of Cultures or Identity Crisis?

Date of Review:  Oct 16, 2002
The Bottom Line: I really wanted to like this book, but it wasn't what I thought. If you are interested in learning more about Chasidism, there are better choices.
Review: Postville, by Steven Bloom, is a very interesting book. I read it almost a month ago now, and the opinion has been brewing in my mind ever since. Disjointed notes, random thoughts…It isn't that the book is that good, but how can I write about it...

Kirkus: "A rural canvas of extremes--from hard-bitten bigots to the naive, the sure of faith, and the latitudarians--disentangled by the author with deft, probing strokes."

Paperback, Postville: A Clash of Cultures in Heartland America
In 1987, a group of Lubavitcher Jews, among the most orthodox and zealous of Jewish sects, opened a kosher slaughterhouse just outside tiny Postville, Iowa (pop. 1,432). When it became a worldwide success, Postville found itself both revived and riven, as the town's initial welcome of the Jews turned to confusion, dismay, and even disgust. By 1997, the town voted on what was essentially a referendum: yes or no on whether these Jews should stay.A laboratory of ethnic strife, Postville is at the leading edge of the new wave of immigration in the heartland. Its story digs deeply into the questions that haunt America nationwide: how to build community, how to accommodate diverse but equally powerful traditions, how small towns can compete with big money. Stephen Bloom's vibrant, dramatic portrait of Postville's troubles is a haunting metaphor for America today.
