Until a Better Novel Comes Along

Date of Review:  Oct 10, 2005
The Bottom Line: A faster read than most other McCarthy novels, still interesting and fun, but without the usual McCarthy style.
Review: The style of No Country For Old Men is a significant departure from the other McCarthy novels I have read. For Delillo fans, it is like the shift from Underworld to The Hand Artist or Cosmopolis. In both cases, the author's brilliance is evident,...

No Country for Old Men is sometimes no sense for all readers

Date of Review:  Dec 12, 2007
The Bottom Line: isn't an old man.
Review: It can be dangerous for an author to know his own strengths. Most of Cormac McCarthy's works feature the same fragmented, naturally epic prose, saturated with broken phrases and run-on sentences. Generally speaking, McCarthy has honed his technique...

a review of the novel no country for old men
5/5 stars
a great crime drama. Pros: has a great thriller like feature
01:55
An action story that transcends the genre to tell us something about both art and life.
5/5 stars
I didn't address the ending in my video, the less said about endings in reviews the better, but it will suffice to say that a lot of people don't like the ending. The movie (which has the last scene in the same place as the book's last pages) ended in one screening in Texas and there was just silence. And then one woman was like, What the fuck was that? The ending definitely messes with what the viewer might have been expecting, its certainly a left turn given the genre expectations of the story, but i think it's a very rich ending that means a lot and stuff. Basically I love this book. This book is thrilling and haunting, realistic yet hyperreal. It's superlean but beautifully written, it has great characters, and no bullshit. Cons: I wish I could read it again for the first time.

Professional Reviews

Time: "What transpires in NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN is very similar to the events in many thrillers...but when they're expertly staged and pitilessly lighted by McCarthy, they somehow mean more than in an ordinary thriller. NO COUNTRY is suffused with Modernist melancholy, a sense that our civilization is dying and all we have ahead of us are endless salt flats of moral and cultural aridity....Bell's gloominess sometimes verges on kids-these-days curmudgeonliness, but there are moments when it feels like a genuine diagnosis of the postmillennial malady, a scary illumination of the oncoming darkness."

First Line

I sent one boy to the gaschamber at Huntsville. One and only one. My arrest and my testimony. I went up there and visited with him two or three times. Three times. The last time was the day of his execution. I didn't want to go but I did. I sure didn't want to go.
