Product Description

Directed by Sidney Lumet, MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS is the definitive adaptation of Agatha Christie's classic mystery, which finds fastidious detective Hercule Poirot (Albert Finney) investigating the murder of an unsavory millionaire among the passengers of a luxury train. This stylish thriller crackles with witty dialogue, moody period-piece atmosphere, and superb performances from an all-star ensemble cast that includes Lauren Bacall, Martin Balsam, Jacqueline Bisset, Sean Connery, John Gielgud, Anthony Perkins, Vanessa Redgrave, and Ingrid Bergman (who won an Academy Award for her role).

Murder on the Orient Express: Over-Baked Agatha Christie

Date of Review:  Nov 7, 2006
The Bottom Line: The DVD has some nice extras--a loving profile of Christie by her grandson, and extensive making-of featurette (be warned: there are spoilers!)
Review: I don't wish to pick a bone with Dame Agatha Christie, but Sidney Lumet's 1974 Murder on the Orient Express is not the best cinematic treatment of one of her novels.

According to rumor, legend or full-bore press agent hype, the all-star...

A Classic Whodunit: Murder on the Orient Express

Date of Review:  Aug 23, 2008
The Bottom Line: Murder on the Orient Express is an Agatha Christie classic brought to the big screen. It's worth watching, but is rather low-key.
Review: Prolific writer Agatha Christie is best remembered for her crime and detective novels. A few of those books were made into movies, including her 1934 novel Murder on the Orient Express, which was released as a film in 1974. The movie features a cast...

Murder on the Orient Express [1974]:The Best Christie's Classics on Screen

Date of Review:  Mar 17, 2001
The Bottom Line: Murder on a train stuck in snow, 12 passengers to suspect and one detective to solve the puzzle: get your coffee and enjoy a great performance
Review: When I was in the 5th grade almost all of my classmates loved detective stories. It was their favorite book genre. I felt kind of odd enjoying foreign classics and one day I decided to give Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot a chance to impress me...

Detective Film DVD - Like many of Agatha Christie's mysteries, Murder on the Orient Express is predicated on an actual event, in this case the Lindbergh kidnapping. In the movie, everyone on board the Orient Express seems to have concluded that hateful financier Ratchett (Richard Widmark) was behind the abduction and murder of the infant daughter of a famed aviatrix. Thus, when Ratchett is himself found murdered, everyone is suspect. Normally, the police would handle the investigation, but the train has been stalled by a snowslide halfway between Istanbul and Paris. Thus, it's up to the insufferable but brilliant Belgian detective Hercule Poirot (an unrecognizable Albert Finney) to activate his "little grey cells" and determine who's guilty. Among the suspects are colorful characters played by Lauren Bacall, Martin Balsam, Jacqueline Bisset, Sean Connery, Wendy Hiller, John Gielgud, Anthony Perkins, Vanessa Redgrave, and Ingrid Bergman, whose performance won her a third Academy Award.
