Product Description

Keith Gordon's darkly comic film version of Kurt Vonnegut Jr.'s highly original novel stars Nick Nolte as Howard J. Campbell Jr., an unusual antihero with a twisted story to tell. The tale begins in a Israeli prison cell, where Campbell is on trial for WWII war crimes. Campbell is given a typewriter and enough paper to recount his bizarre memoir, which appears as a series of black-and-white and color scenes that shift between 1940s Germany, 1950s New York, and 1960s Israel. The American Campbell and his parents relocate to Germany between the two world wars and live a happy life. Campbell grows up to be a playwright and marries a beautiful German actress, Helga Noth (Sheryl Lee). On a day like any other, Campbell's life takes a bizarre turn as he is offered a top-secret assignment by a U.S. government official (John Goodman in an unbilled role)--to pose as a Nazi sympathizer while relaying secret American code via the radio. Campbell successfully accomplishes his mission by starting an anti-American, ant...

Vonnegut Told Well In 'Mother Night'

Date of Review:  Jun 24, 2002
The Bottom Line: In the days of turning books into movies, some go unnoticed, and they are often the ones most deserving of praise.
Review:
There are two main things to know about the movie 'Mother Night', and just about every review I've been able to find of the movie mentions them enthusiastically (though they don't always give the movie high marks overall). The first is that the...

Keith Gordon's Mother Night: Losing Your Identity For Your Country~

Date of Review:  Apr 27, 2007
The Bottom Line: If you like this movie, check out Slaughterhouse-Five and the documentaries The Ground Truth and Sir! No Sir! 4.5 stars.
Review: I've now watched two Kurt Vonnegut Jr. novels made into movies, that of Slaughterhouse-Five and Mother Night, and the latter one may just be a better transfer. Vonnegut is well-known for his forays into clever satire, which makes for a cinematic...

The Great Pretender: An Evaluation of Mother Night

Date of Review:  Nov 22, 2002
The Bottom Line: Mother Night is a movie that will teach one lessons about life, and one should watch it when the proper maturity level is reached by the viewer.
Review: The movie Mother Night, produced and directed by Keith Gordon, tells an amazing story of a man, Howard W. Campbell, Jr., who was a playwright and a spy for the Americans in Germany in the 1930s and 40s. This film explores the many different aspects...

Professional Reviews

(11/28/1996, p.143, Peter Travers): "...Nick Nolte does his best acting in years..."

Quotes from the Movie

"I was deposited on to the streets of New York, restored to the mainstream of life. I took several steps down the sidewalk when something happened. It was not guilt that froze me; I had taught myself never to feel guilt. It wasn't the fear of death; I had taught myself to think of death as a friend. It was not the thought of being unloved that froze me; I had taught myself to do without love. What froze me was the fact that I had absolutely no reason to move in any direction."--Howard J. Campbell Jr. (Nick Nolte)

"All the best writers are dead."--George Kraft (Alan Arkin) to Campbell

"Your role will remain classified, and Uncle Sam's official position is you're the scum of the earth."--Frank Wirtanen (John Goodman) to Campbell

"I guess the moral here is: You must be careful what you pretend to be, because in the end you are who you're pretending to be."--Campbell
