This action-packed war film follows the adventures of a group of paratroopers in the French army. Leading the soldiers is Pierre Raspeguy (Anthony Quinn), a tough peasant who has risen through the ranks to become a lieutenant colonel. The troop first heads off to Indochina, where French forces suffer a big defeat at Dien Bien Phu. Soon, the men are sent off to Algeria, whose citizens are waging a fierce guerrilla war against French rule. Not all of the servicemen, however, support their country's decisions -- including Algerian-born Mahidi (George Segal), who deserts his comrades after his parents are murdered during the fighting. From Dien Bien Phu to Algeria with the French Colonial Paratroops

by   colonialpara ,  Oct 17, 2003
Pros: An excellent historical primer on the French wars in Indo-China and Algeria.
Cons: Artistic license compression of the historical time line.
The Bottom Line: A two hour history lesson into France's colonial defeat in Indo-China and their bloody war to retain control of Algeria.
Review: LOST COMMAND, a 1966 movie starring Anthony Quinn and based on the best-selling novel, "The Centurions" by French author Jean Larteguy is probably the only large scale movie made that deals with the French colonial experiences in Indo-China and Algeria. ...

A Bad Decade for the French: Lost Command

by   George_Chabot , top reviewer in Movies at Epinions.com ,  Jul 14, 2005
Pros: Good synopsis of French military history during the 1950s. Anthony Quinn, supporting cast, action, score
Cons: Overlong
The Bottom Line: Lost Command shows the gallantry of French soldiers and the undermining influence of French politicians. Pretty good history. Worth watching!
Review: Lost Command (1966) The 20th Century was a bad epoch for the French; they went 0 for 4 in the major wars they were involved in and yet have retained a sneering arrogance, despite the fact that they have little to be proud of. This attitude vexes me, ...
