Product Description

LOST BOYS OF SUDAN, directed by San Francisco-based documentary filmmakers Megan Mylan and Jon Shenk, observes the experiences and impressions of two boys from Sudan who were brought to the United States as part of a resettlement program that took place in 2001. Thousands of people were allowed to immigrate to the United States to escape from the civil war that had plagued Sudan for 20 years, driving many of that country's residents to refugee camps. Peter Dut and Santino Chuor met Mylan and Shank in a refugee camp in Kakuma Kenya, which is where they agreed to make LOST BOYS. The film tracks their passage to the United States, where they settle into lives and jobs in Houston, Texas, and Kansas City, Missouri. It is through their eyes that the film communicates both an idea of what Sudan is like in their memories of home, the differences between the lives they led in Africa and their new lives in the United States, and the simple homesickness and frustration that comes with being transplanted to a totall...

Lost Boys Of Sudan: Disneyesque Docurama Takes On Refugee Resettlement Program~

Date of Review:  Sep 9, 2006
The Bottom Line: "I want to go to California and learn the ways of your tribe," one of the boys said to one of the directors. Sorry, no CA for these two boys.
Review: A staff person at my library heard my complaint over not yet getting this disturbing documentary called Invisible Children and he recommended the 2004 documentary called Lost Boys of Sudan, saying it would also be disturbing. Then I listened to a...

"Lost Boys" of Sudan Find Strange New American Home

Date of Review:  Nov 8, 2009
The Bottom Line: An earnest and upbeat look at resettlement.

Review: My interest in watching the 2003 "Lost Boys of the Sudan" came from the Sudan not directly, but from reading Emmanuel Jal's War Child. None of "Lost Boys of the Sudan" shows the genocide long running there, except as recalled in some watercolors...

From Africa to America:Lost Boys of Sudan

Date of Review:  Oct 28, 2005
The Bottom Line: A very good documentary about people discovering the American Dream isn't a cakewalk... although it could still be worth it.
Review: For anyone living in miserable poverty, anything would look better than what you currently have. And for someone living in a Third World country, especially one where misfortune just seems to be par for the course, to be able to escape to a better...

Professional Reviews

(03/12/2004, p.E4, Manohla Dargis): "In their heartbreak of a nonfiction film, LOST BOYS OF SUDAN, directors Megan Mylan and Jon Shenk offer a part of the story that has gone underreported."

Biographical Documentary DVD - Megan Mylan and Jon Shenk's award-winning documentary Lost Boys of Sudan examines what happens when a pair of Sudanese boys, orphaned due to a civil war in their home country, are allowed to live for a year in the United States. Santito and Peter must contend with extreme examples of culture shock, while also figuring out how to negotiate a world that is physically safe but emotionally and intellectually foreign to them. Unlike many documentaries, the film does not employ a voice-over narration. Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide - Lost Boys of Sudan (DVD)
