Lonesome Dove: "Far out in the chaparral flats..."

Date of Review:  Aug 26, 2001
The Bottom Line: Every page crammed with beautifully descriptive passages, intensely emotional situations, fast-paced action, and wonderfully drawn characters.
Review: Well, folks, I have a little confession to make. This year I have not been keeping up with my reading as well as I did last year. By this time in 2000, I had read 16 books, totaling over 8,900 pages. This year to date, I?ve read only 8 books...

Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry: It Won the Pulitzer for a Good Reason

Date of Review:  Jul 6, 2001
The Bottom Line: McMurtry brings life to these characters and ropes us into caring about them. Excellent book without a spot that you can skip over.
Review: Lonesome Dove can be real intimidating when you first pick it up to read. The paperback version logs in at 945 pages. To me, it is worth reading every single one of those pages.

In our culture, both on the silver screen and small screen,...

Hell just froze over - I found a Western that I loved!

Date of Review:  Jul 27, 2006
The Bottom Line: The bottom line is practicing its lasso technique
Review: Recently, I finished a book and went to get the next one in my library stack when -gasp- I realized my library stack was gone. Remembering that when we moved the year before, we left almost 50 boxes of books unopened in the basement, I asked Z to go...

Professional Reviews

Washington Post Book World: "This could be the beginning of any number of western novels. All the standard elements are present. Turn the key, and the clockwork figures will start shooting, drinking, roping cows, whoring....It happens instead to be the start of one of the best westerns I have ever read. It certainly is the best of Larry McMurtry's, and he has written good ones before."

Paperback, Lonesome Dove
Lonesome Dove, by Larry McMurtry, the author of Terms of Endearment, is his long-awaited masterpiece, the major novel at last of the American West as it really was.A love story, an adventure, an American epic, Lonesome Dove embraces all the West - legend and fact, heroes and outlaws, whores and ladies, Indians and settlers - in a novel that recreates the central American experience, the most enduring of our national myths.Set in the late nineteenth century, Lonesome Dove is the story of a cattle drive from Texas to Montana - and much more. It is a drive that represents for everybody involved not only a daring, even a foolhardy, adventure, but a part of the American Dream - the attempt to carve out of the last remaining wilderness a new life.Augustus McCrae and W. F. Call are former Texas Rangers, partners and friends who have shared hardship and danger together without ever quite understanding (or wanting to understand) each other's deepest emotions. Gus is the romantic, a reluctant rancher who has a way ...
