Product Description

E.M. Forster's 1910 novel is adapted for the screen by Merchant Ivory Productions in this masterful Edwardian Age romance directed by James Ivory. The dying Ruth Wilcox (Vanessa Redgrave) wishes to leave her country home, Howards End, to Margaret Schlegel (Emma Thompson in an Academy Award-winning role), a modest woman of little means who will soon be forced out of her own home in London. But Ruth's husband, Henry (Anthony Hopkins), an upper middle class businessman, keeps secret her desire even after he and Margaret become friends. However, after Henry and Margaret marry, their class differences and philosophies threaten to cause them unhappiness. Margaret's sister, Helen (Helena Bonham Carter), is disgusted by the Wilcox's snobbish ways and is attracted to helping struggling clerk Leonard Bast (Sam West) improve his position. Howards End: Yes, it's a beautiful film, but is it art?

Date of Review:  Mar 19, 2002
The Bottom Line: Beautiful film, but the pace is so slow and the characters so distant I was bored halfway through and wondering when it was going to get to the point.
Review: After languishing on my to-be-seen heap of dvd's, I finally got around to watching this one. Having picked up the Best Picture Oscar for 1992, I thought I was going to be in for some scintilliating acting (after all, it has four Oscar winners in the...

The Poor Are the Poor

Date of Review:  Sep 7, 2005
The Bottom Line: One of the finest of the Merchant-Ivory period pieces. Highly recommended.
Review: The intertwining fates of the Schlegels, Wilcoxes, and Basts become the gist of the plot of this E.M. Forster novel, made into an award-winning film adaptation by the Merchant-Ivory Production Company. It's got all the period panache you could ask...

Howards End . . . I enjoyed this movie!

Date of Review:  Feb 20, 2000
Review: I?ve rented this movie, and I?ve also watched it on HBO. I watched it ?again? last night.

I guess when a screenplay is written based on an E. M. Forster?s novel; not much can go wrong. Especially when the screenwriter has done an...
