Product Description

After a decade in abeyance, the courtly cannibal, Hannibal Lecter, returns to the screen, again played by Anthony Hopkins, under the direction of Ridley Scott. When F.B.I. Agent Clarice Starling (Julianne Moore) is blamed for a botched drug bust, her boss Paul Krendler (Ray Liotta) makes a media circus of her humiliation, which catches the attention of Lecter. Now a hardened veteran, she begins receiving letters from the twisted genius, who remains obsessed with her. Yet she's not the only one interested in drawing out the psychopath, now lecturing on the Renaissance in Florence. Italian detective Pazzi (Giancarlo Giannini) hopes to impress his young wife by nailing the reward for his capture, and wealthy pedophile Mason Verger (Gary Oldman) is eager to take revenge against the cannibal for leaving him with a hideously deformed face. But they're no match for Hannibal's coyly satanic ubiquity, which bewilders his quickly narcotized foes before he administers a punishment sufficiently grotesque to suit his...

It's better than the book. Unfortunately, that's not saying much...

Date of Review:  Feb 10, 2001
The Bottom Line: It's not scary. It's not suspenseful. It's just trying to gross you out. Watch The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and her Lover instead.
Review: Some people never learn. I know I don?t. After plowing through Hannibal, the novel, I swore I wouldn?t give another penny to Thomas Harris and the Hannibal Lecter enterprise. Although I truly enjoyed The Silence of the Lambs and Red...

the end of the Hannibal Lecter trilogy: Ridley Scott's visually brave Hannibal

Date of Review:  Feb 9, 2001
The Bottom Line: beautiful and visually brave - a grotesque funhouse ride that ends, unfortunately, with an appeal for wider acceptance.
Review: Ridley Scott?s nailed it.

He?s recreated the dark fugue state of Thomas Harris? grimoire Hannibal, and done so with the appropriate level of grotesquerie. It?s a cinematic geek tent ? slide that nine bucks over to the querulous carbuncular...

Cannibal Lecter strikes again, this time with an appetite for brains

Date of Review:  Apr 10, 2001
The Bottom Line: Hannibal is a haunting unique movie that uses gross-out tactics to horrify the audience. However it's lack of ending makes it bad.
Review: Is grossing out the same as scare? Did I flinch in this movie because of an unexpected shock, or was my stomach churning instead from the movie? Apparently director Ridley Scott thought that grossing out and scaring people are the same.

The silence has been broken... Thrilling (Time), absorbing (The Wall Street Journal) and entertaining (Newsday), this follow-up to The Silence Of The Lambs is an audience success (US Weekly)! Anthony Hopkins is perverse perfection (Rolling Stone) in his return to the role of Dr. Hannibal Lechter, the sophisticated killer who comes out of hiding to draw FBI agent Clarice Starling (Julianne Moore) into a high-stakes battle that will test her strength, cunning...and loyalty. Drenched in terror, suspense and shocking visual effects,. Hannibal is as compelling a film as you will ever see (Joel Siegel, Good Morning America)!
