Product Description

Hot-tempered, self-centered, part-Irish Southern beauty Scarlett O'Hara, played to the teeth by Vivien Leigh, loves the gentlemanly Ashley Wilkes (Leslie Howard). Smug, rebellious, honest, blockade-running profiteer Rhett Butler, portrayed gracefully and naturally by Clark Gable, loves Scarlett. Ashley, who is also in love with Scarlett, marries his genteel cousin Melanie (Olivia de Havilland) because he believes that their quiet similarities will create a better marriage than Scarlett's passion. Meanwhile, sparks fly between Rhett and Scarlett at their first encounter and continue throughout Scarlett's first two marriages. Scarlett and Rhett finally wed, but Scarlett continues to pine for her beloved Ashley. Set against the Civil War and Southern Reconstruction, this tragic love quadrangle offers the burning of Atlanta and fields of wounded Confederates as part of its lush scenery. Meticulous backdrops, glorious sunsets, numerous silhouettes, and the ultrasaturated Technicolor film create a hyperreal vi...

Gone Down South (An entry in the July Cross Media W/O hosted by mshawpyle)

Date of Review:  Jul 14, 2002
The Bottom Line: Sixty odd years later, Gone with the Wind remains the quintessential Hollywood epic, if a highly inaccurate depiction of the Civil War era South.
Review: Herbert Scrawcrunch, that no good piece of poor white trash, seems to have returned from his trip to Tijuana. At least I can hear him and Doreen going at it hammer and tongs downstairs and that disgusting piece of corrugated tin that they call a...

A classic among classics

Date of Review:  Jan 26, 2005
The Bottom Line: This movie is considered one of the best of all time, and I have to admit it probably is.
Review: It's very rare that any medium of entertainment can give one an authentic, vivid sense of reality and life. All stories are about select moments of time and places in the characters' lives, but only the truly great ones are able to define their...

Gone with the Wind Four Disc Collector's Edition DVD
5/5 stars
Gone with the Wind (Four-Disc Collector's Edition), Movie DVDs, Movies & TV. David O. Selznick wanted Gone with the Wind to be somehow more than a movie, a film that would broaden the very idea of what a film could be and do and look like. He achieved that goal. This is a wonderful movie. FIVE STARS

Margaret Mitchell's "Immortal tale of the old South" has Leigh as Scarlett and Gable as Rhett. The burning of Atlanta was a high water mark for screen excitement. As poet Ogden Nash put it, "The Civil War was quite a fight and not a mere diversion; I never knew how tough it was before [producer] Dave Selznick's version."
