Personnel: Billy Corgan (vocals, guitar); D'Arcy (vocals); James Iha (guitar); Jimmy Chamberlain, Jimmy Chamberlin (drums). Recording information: Smart Studios, Madison, WI (12/1990-03/1991). Photographers: Bob Knapp; Michael Lavine. The Pumpkins' debut hit the music world at the height of the grunge phenomenon of the early 90s, and exhibited most of the usual characteristics - heavy rock riffs, often reminiscent of GN'R ("Siva," in particular), thrashing guitars and brooding, self-deprecating lyrics. However, GISH rose above the bulk of the college rock bands, revealing more refined songwriting sensibilities courtesy of Billy Corgan, and presenting astonishingly touching ballads ("Crush"). Gish: The Words Really Aren't Important

The Bottom Line: Like Smashing Pumpkins? Consider yourself a semi-fan? Then Gish is worth checking out. Maybe not the place to start, but a fine enough place to end up.

The Bottom Line: A must have for any Pumpkin fan, especially if you liked Siamese Dream and are looking for something rawer and heavier. Anyone who enjoys early 90's alt-rock will like this.
