Product Description

From his first novel, Mohawk, to his most recent, Straight Alan, Richard Russo has demonstrated great affinity for the tragicomic human condition, and here he expands his geographical and psychological claims on the small town, blue-collar heart of the country.

Empire Falls, Maine, has seen the inexorable failure of its logging and textile industries, the once mighty holdings of the Whiting clan, presided over by the last scion's widow, now mostly amount to decrepit real estate.

Miles Roby gazes over this ruined kingdom from the Empire Grill, an opportunity that has become the albatross of his ambitions. Brought home from college by family obligations, his mother ailing, his father a loose cannon, Miles himself now has a divorce to contend with, but also a beloved daughter to guide gently through adolescence.

Miles also proves an excellent guide to this hardscrabble, persistent community: fathers and sons and daughters, living and dead, rich and poor. Shot through with mysteries of gener

Empire Falls: "Just beyond the factory and the mill..."

Date of Review:  Jun 24, 2001
The Bottom Line: Destined to become a modern classic of American fiction!
Review: Well, folks, the "fiction addiction" continues unabated.

It's been two weeks since I finished reading two wonderful novels ? The Godfather and Once An Eagle. On this rainy Saturday, I scamper over to the bookstore in our local community in...

Welcome to Empire Falls: Home of Regret and Lost Ambition

Date of Review:  Jul 20, 2001
The Bottom Line: Richard Russo has written the definitive turn-of-the-century epic novel of small-town America. This book teems with eccentricity and brilliancy.
Review: Richard Russo?s Empire Falls might just replace Larry McMurtry?s Thalia, Texas as the greatest dying town in American literature.

Like the one-stoplight community in The Last Picture Show, Russo?s fictional Maine town has seen better days...

Russo's chronicle of lost hearts and lost dreams in Empire Falls

Date of Review:  Jun 6, 2005
The Bottom Line: This one picked up a Pulitzer Prize for best novel. Excellent storytelling, characters that remain with you.
Review: I tend to avoid the mainstream bestsellers, but I had heard so many good comments about Richard Russo's Empire Falls, that when the time was right, I settled in to take it all in, and found myself immersed into the cares of a small town in Maine...

Professional Reviews

New York Times Book Review: "Russo's command of his story is unerring, but his manner is so unassuming that his mastery is easy to miss. He satisfies every expectation without lapsing into predictability....By the end of this novel, you'll know the town's geography like a native, and its tattered landmarks...will be as vivid and as charged with metaphor as Salem's house of seven gables or the mansions of East Egg. You will also have had the good fortune to tour this unremarkable geography in the company of an amiable, witty raconteur....[Russo is] one of the best novelists around."

Paperback, Empire Falls: Premio Pulitzer 2002
With Empire Falls, Richard Russo cements his reputation as one of America's most compelling and compassionate storytellers. Miles Roby has been slinging burgers at the Empire Grill for 20 years, a job that cost him his college education and much of his self-respect. What keeps him there? It could be his bright, sensitive daughter Tick, who needs all his help surviving the local high school. Or maybe it's Janine, Miles' soon-to-be ex-wife, who's taken up with a noxiously vain health-club proprietor. Or perhaps it's the imperious Francine Whiting, who owns everything in town - and seems to believe that "everything" includes Miles himself. In Empire Falls, Richard Russo delves deep into the blue-collar heart of America in a work that overflows with hilarity, heartache, and grace.
