With soaring vision and profound intelligence, Robert Stone has written a harrowing, breathtaking novel about our desperate search, at any price, for the consolation of redemption - and about the people who are all too willing to provide it. A violent confrontation in the Gaza Strip, a mind-altering pilgrimage, a race through riot-filled Jerusalem streets, a cat-and-mouse game in an underground maze, a desperate attempt to prevent a bomb from detonating beneath the Temple Mount - Damascus Gate is an exhilarating journey through the moral and religious ambiguities that haunt the holiest of cities and its seekers, cynics, hustlers, and madmen. Set in Jerusalem, where violence, ecstasy, heresy, and salvation are all to be found, Damascus Gate is simultaneously the story of a man's search for truth - or some version of it - and the story of a city where sanity is casually traded for faith. Best novel of the decade

by   jorn ,  Sep 14, 1999
Pros: Deep, smart, hip, funny
Cons: Difficult, controversial
Review: Robert Stone writes slowly, and cares little for fashion, so he hasn't really had a big hit... but I think he'll be remembered as one of the best novelists of the 20th century.

Damascus Gate for me surpasses even Dog Soldiers in its...

A Religious and Political Thriller

by   sdjones ,  Mar 6, 2000
Pros: Unique story in an ancient and modern setting.
Cons: Author uses more obscure names and terms than really needed to tell the story.
Review: Using a large and varied cast of characters, Robert Stone explores the convoluted, shifting aspects of life, religion and politics in modern Israel. The hook in the story is that one of the characters is writing a book about the Jerusalem Syndrome which...
