Product Description

A reluctant voyager crossing the Pacific in 1850; a disinherited composer blagging a precarious livelihood in between-the-wars Belgium; a high-minded journalist in Governor Reagan's California; a vanity publisher fleeing his gangland creditors; a genetically modified 'dinery server' on death-row; and Zachry, a young Pacific Islander witnessing the nightfall of science and civilisation; the narrators of Cloud Atlas hear each others' echoes down the corridor of history, and their destinies are changed in ways great and small.

In his extraordinary third novel, David Mitchell erases the boundaries of language, genre and time to offer a meditation on humanity's dangerous will to power, and where it may lead us.

'Souls cross ages like clouds cross skies...'

Date of Review:  Apr 12, 2005
The Bottom Line: An interesting and unusual book that isn't what you think!
Review: I am always pleased when a book is recommended to me by a friend. Often people think that, because I work in a library, I have mysteriously read every book in the world. Therefore, they expect me to tell them about titles and which authors to read...

Tis' a sad day indeed, when everyone drives a Ford.,

Date of Review:  Oct 8, 2005
The Bottom Line: I would highly recommend this to any Neal Stevenson fan (esp. of the Baroque Cycle) or any erudite reader with a considerable attention span.
Review: I hope that 'Ford' is just the word that replaced 'car' or 'vehicle' in one of the most interesting portions (a corporate controlled, clone fueled Korea) of Mitchell's most recent work. It is also sad that most who start out reading this may never...

Kirkus: "Great Britain's answer to Thomas Pynchon outdoes himself with this maddeningly intricate, improbably entertaining [novel]....[I]n one of the most imaginative and rewarding novels in recent memory, the author unforgettably explores issues of exploitation, tyranny, slavery, and genocide....Sheer storytelling brilliance."
