The 2005 Chevrolet Equinox's competitors include the Chrysler PT Cruiser, the Hyundai Santa Fe, and the Suzuki Grand Vitara. Upon introduction, both trims are equipped with a standard 3.4-liter, V6, 185-horsepower engine that achieves 19-mpg in the city and 25-mpg on the highway. A 5-speed automatic transmission is standard. The 2005 Chevrolet Equinox is all-new for 2005.

Nine years late, worth the wait?

The Bottom Line: Great looks and a smooth ride, but middling interior materials and not much fun to drive.
Review: When the party is a hot new vehicle market segment, being late is never fashionable. Rather, the manufacturers who arrive earliest enjoy healthy profit margins and establish images as the class leaders.
