Holden Caulfield Turns 50. That kills me.

Date of Review:  Aug 2, 2001
The Bottom Line: If you've never read this book, do it. If you've already read this book but it's been a while, do it again.
Review: On July 16, Holden Caulfield--arguably the most talked-about youth in literature (get in line, Huck Finn and Harry Potter!)--turned 50. That same day, my own mother turned [ edited for delicacy's sake ]. So, Holden and Mom share the same birthday...

If a body catch a body coming through the rye

Date of Review:  Sep 23, 2000
Review: Contrary to popular belief, the fact that Catcher in the Rye uses misspelled profanity does not make it edgy. On that same note, the fact that assassin Mark Chapman asked John Lennon to sign it for him earlier in the morning of December 8, 1980...

Phonies really do suck...

Date of Review:  Dec 20, 2002
The Bottom Line: If you are a distressed teen, read The Catcher in the Rye.
Review: Are you a depressed teenager that has no clue what you want to do with your life? Are you sick of all the phonies in our society pretending to be who they really aren't? Don't you wish you could live in a world where things run the way you want them...

Classic teen angst that still applies today.
5/5 stars
Holden Caulfield is a cynical person. However, he is almost too cynical, so much that it is funny, and the situations he gets into after being expelled from a well-respected prep school are things he deserves. But somehow, we still relate to him as he narrates his journey back home and criticizes the people (and places) he encounters along the way. Pros: simplistic writing style., easy to read

Bookforum: "The book never fails to interest me, to make me laugh (out loud, every time), to demonstrate the powers of unembellished writing, to give me written characters I can believe in, to make me respect the author to this day for his unrelenting courage to go his own way."

First Line

If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you'll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth.
