Product Description

In a nation divided on the slavery question, 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' had the profound effect of defining and calling dramatic attention to the issues involved. Though a century had passed since the novel's first publication, 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' is curiously undated, surprisingly sophisticated, deeply moving.

Uncle Tom's Cabin: A Satire

Date of Review:  Dec 11, 2001
The Bottom Line: This book held up a mirror to white 19th century society, North and South, and showed them a true image of themselves.
Review: Uncle Tom?s Cabin stirred up enough controversy in the 1850s to set off a Civil War that had more casualties than all the other armed conflicts in which the US had been involved, combined, until World War II. Uncle Tom?s Cabin has also sparked...

Pros
Satire, political message
Cons
Weak writing at times, non-PC language

A powerful, important message in a weak novel!

Date of Review:  Oct 24, 2009
The Bottom Line: Despite its faults, "Uncle Tom's Cabin" still should be considered a MUST read in my books.
Review: As a classic, Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin" deserves its status as a powerful indictment against the history of black slavery in America. With courage and insight unprecedented in her time, Stowe uses moving family tales of a number of...

Uncle Tom-the perfect slave?

Date of Review:  May 24, 2002
The Bottom Line: This is a historical novel that has never been out of print since its beginning. You will come away from it understanding the time period a little better.
Review: I read 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' in celebration of Black History Month. Although the author was not a black American, I decided the subject was appropriate for that month.
Harriet Beecher Stowe was very obviously an abolitionist. She didn't see any...

Professional Reviews

"In 'Uncle Tom's Cabin', the most beautiful passage is perhaps the one in which the poor slave, knowing he must die, and sitting for the last time with his wife, remembers the words, '...May I but safely reach my home,/My God, my heaven, my all.' This is far from theology, simply a fact, that the poorest little woodcutter or peasant...can have moments of emotion and inspiration which give him a feeling of an eternal home to which he is near."

Paperback, Uncle Tom's Cabin
In Which the Reader Is Introduced to a Man of HumanityLate in the afternoon of a chilly day in February, two gentlemen were sitting alone over their wine, in a well-furnished dining parlor, in the town of P-------, in Kentucky. There were no servants present, and the gentlemen, with chairs closely approaching, seemed to be discussing some subject with great earnestness. For convenience sake, we have said, hitherto, two "gentlemen." One of the parties, however, when critically examined, did not seem, strictly speaking, to come under the species. He was a short, thick-set man, with coarse, commonplace features, and that swaggering air of pretension which marks a low man who is trying to elbow his way upward in the world. He was much over-dressed, in a gaudy vest of many colors, a blue neckerchief, bedropped gayly with yellow spots, and arranged with a flaunting tie, quite in keeping with the general air of the man. His hands, large and coarse, were plentifully bedecked with rings; and he wore a heavy gold ...
