The Graveyard Book Deserves the John Newbery Medal

Date of Review:  Feb 13, 2009
The Bottom Line:

Neil Gaiman's book, although barely 300 pages, filled my imagination with images of an unlikely world -- a cemetery where a baby can grow to be a young man.

Review: Truly talented storytellers weave intrigue and develop enchanting characters, they drop crumbs along the path of their tales and pull them all together with glue that won t release the reader until the conclusion. Neil Gaiman proves himself a master...

The Graveyard - Anything But a "Resting Place!"

Date of Review:  Feb 14, 2009
The Bottom Line: This is a book with a clever setting and premise, well-developed characters, humor, and a story line that keeps one turning the pages.
Review: So far, 2009 seems to be a good year for author Neil Gaiman. First, his delightfully spooky novella Coraline was released as a feature animated film, and now his charmingly eerie The Graveyard Book has been awarded the prestigious Newberry Award for...

It takes a graveyard to raise a child*

Date of Review:  May 4, 2009
The Bottom Line: This novel has an intriguing gothic concept that blends the themes of Harry Potter and Tim Burton, but the main character lacks a goal.
Review: The Graveyard Book has won the Newberry Medal and is nominated for the 2009 Hugo Award for best novel, which will have the winner announced in August. The idea is intriguing; it comes off as a cross between Harry Potter and the work of Director Tim...

Professional Reviews

Kirkus Reviews: "Wistful, witty, wise--and creepy. Gaiman's riff on Kipling's Mowgli stories never falters, from the truly spine-tingling opening, in which a toddler accidentally escapes his family's murderer, to the melancholy, life-affirming ending."
