The Bottom Line: Ann Patchett is a gifted writer, but this is not her best book. Skip this one and read "Truth and Beauty" or "The Patron Saint of Liars" instead.

The Bottom Line: The characters are the story in this novel, and the history of the ?statue? is worth the price of admission. A very good depiction of Bostonian/liberal/Irish conflicts.
