Product Description

This fiercely comic tale stands in marked contrast to its genial predecessor, The Pickwick Papers. Set against Londons seedy back street slums, Oliver Twist is the saga of a workhouse orphan captured and thrust into a thieves den, where some of Dickens's most depraved villains preside: the incorrigible Artful Dodger, the murderous bully Sikes, and the terrible Fagin, that treacherous ringleader whose grinning knavery threatens to send them all to the "ghostly gallows." Yet at the heart of this drama is the orphan Oliver, whose unsullied goodness leads him at last to salvation. In 1838 the publication of Oliver Twist firmly established the literary eminence of young Dickens. It was, according to Edgar Johnson, "a clarion peal announcing to the world that in Charles Dickens the rejected and forgotten and misused of the world had a champion."

"More? You want more?" Of course I do!

Date of Review:  Jun 13, 2001
The Bottom Line: The most accessible of the Dickens tales, Oliver Twist is a great book with a protagonist that will touch your heart.
Review: Dickens has always been a bit beyond me; I could comprehend the writing, but I couldn t enjoy it. I did wrestle my way through David Copperfield; I got 2/3 through A Tale of Two Cities; and my mom read Great Expectations aloud to me a few years ago...

Reflections of Society in Literature

Date of Review:  Mar 31, 2003
The Bottom Line: Perhaps not Dickens best work but a must read all the same.
Review: Among all of the works of Charles Dickens, perhaps none explores the plight of those least able to defend themselves in early nineteenth century England, the orphans, as does Oliver Twist. Certainly, Dickens novels invariably have some commentary on...

THERE WILL NEVER BE ANY MORE UNFORTUNATELY

Date of Review:  Mar 24, 2001
The Bottom Line: Written in a bye gone age it gives readers an insight into how life was in Victorian England. Writers today cannot surpass it.
Review: "Please Sir, I want some more"..........

I wonder if there is anybody who wouldn't be able to give the name of the poor urchin who uttered those words. Oliver Twist and the author, Charles Dickens are known to lovers of classics worldwide...

First Line

Among other public buildings in a certain town which for many reasons it will be prudent to refrain from mentioning, and to which I will assign no fictitious name, it boasts of one which is common to most towns, great or small, to wit, a workhouse; and in this workhouse was born, on a day and date which I need not take upon myself to repeat, inasmuch as it can be of no possible consequence to the reader, in this stage of the business at all events, the item of mortality whose name is prefixed to the head of this chapter.
