Product Description

In this autobiography, a trailblazing female journalist describes how the inquiring mind of her childhood years fueled her reporting career, and details her life in the press corps fast lane, covering administrations from Kennedy's to Clinton's. The author defends the necessity of the probing, often adversarial relationship between presidents and the press.

Not much to be thankful for

Date of Review:  Jun 19, 2002
The Bottom Line: Thomas has covered the White House for more than 40 years. It would be difficult to make a boring book about her experiences, but she has.
Review: A great story, even better because it is probably true: When Lyndon Johnson was President of the United States, he hosted a dinner party at the White House. Bill Moyers, who was Johnson's press secretary, said grace. Annoyed, Johnson commanded,...

An extraordinary life

Date of Review:  Aug 6, 2001
The Bottom Line: Recommended. Especially for those interested in politics, journalism or women's rights.
Review: When I first started reading this book, I was a bit disappointed. The book jacket describes the book in the following way:

?From the woman who has reported on every president from Kennedy to Clinton for United Press International: a unique...

An alternate viewpoint

Date of Review:  Feb 24, 2003
The Bottom Line: This book is probably best read in short bits over a period of time, but has a fair amount to say. Those interested in politics should consider it.
Review: Having read eplovejoy's excellent, but negative review of this book (and especially having seen that it is the only review available), I felt obliged to make a few comments for some contrast. While "Thanks for the Memories, Mr. President" is far...

Professional Reviews

intellectualcapital.com: "...FRONT ROW disappoints in one way--readers do not learn a whole lot about Thomas....Despite this shortcoming, [she] does an excellent job of translating nearly 40 years of experience into a fast-paced, thoroughly entertaining read. Instead of focusing on the deeds of the eight presidencies she has reported on, her breezy style of reporting on their personalities that made up these administrations will give fans of the presidency and press a fun, positive summertime [reading] experience."

First Line

A reporter's work involves observing, listening and writing about people, places and events. I've been fortunate in that I've spent most of my time as a reporter writing about people in high places.
