Product Description

Birds Without Wings is the story of a small town in Anatolia in the dying days of the Ottoman Empire told in the richly varied voices of the men and women (Armenians, Christians, and Muslims) whose lives are intertwined and rooted there: Iskander, the potter and local fount of wisdom; Philotei, the Christian girl of legendary beauty, courted almost from infancy by Ibrahim the goatherd, a great love that culminates in tragedy and madness; and many more. When jihad is declared against the Franks and the young men of the town are conscripted, we follow Iskander's son, Karatavuk, to Gallipoli, where the intimate brutality of battle robs him of all innocence, just as the town he left behind is robbed of its centuries-old peace by the twin scourges of fanatical religion and nationalism that the war unleashed.

Date of Review:  Sep 24, 2006
The Bottom Line: The lives of inhabitants of a small, remote Turkish town are irrevocably changed as the world plunges into WWI and neighbours, friends and lovers are torn apart.
Review: The little Anatolian town of Eskibahce at the turn of the 20th century is home to an eclectic group of people—the local Muslim Ottomans who learn the Koran without understanding Arabic, Greek Christians who have lived in Turkey for so many...

The Bottom Line: Highly recommend the book: great writing, fact fiction blended elegantly and cleverly. See Remarks in review.
Review: This book was lent to me by a friend who liked it and recommended I read it. It is a long book over 350 pages. I am not a fast reader, especially if the book is boring. So the number of pages might intimidate a reader like me. But let me tell you a...

Professional Reviews

Publishers Weekly: "Though some readers may balk at the novel's sheer heft, the reward is an effective and moving portrayal of a way of life--and lives--that might, if not for Bernihres's careful exposition and imagination, be lost to memory forever."

Paperback, Birds Without Wings
In his first novel since Corelli's Mandolin, Louis de Bernieres creates a world, populates it with characters as real as our best friends, and launches it into the maelstrom of twentieth- century history. The setting is a small village in southwestern Anatolia in the waning years of the Ottoman Empire. Everyone there speaks Turkish, though they write it in Greek letters. It's a place that has room for a professional blasphemer; where a brokenhearted aga finds solace in the arms of a Circassian courtesan who isn't Circassian at all; where a beautiful Christian girl named Philothei is engaged to a Muslim boy named Ibrahim. But all of this will change when Turkey enters the modern world. Epic in sweep, intoxicating in its sensual detail, Birds Without Wings is an enchantment.
