Product Description

 
The story centers on young Francis Nolan, whose father's sudden death leaves the family to somehow survive in a harsh, desperate time. Like the tree in the back of their house, uncared for and forgotten, their struggle to survive is a valiant one. Based on Betty Smith's 1943 novel. The Bottom Line: shows you how life around 1900 in the big city.
Review: I just ran across the movie the other night on one of the old movie channels on my Direct TV.

TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN was made it 1945 from Betty Smith novel, who also wrote " JOY IN THE MORNING.' I love that book, but didn't like the movie...

The Bottom Line: Perhaps one of the ten best films ever made, this seminal family tearjerker is recommended to all but the most cynical film fans.
Review: Elia Kazan is best known for making a star of Marlon Brando in A Streetcar Named Desire and On the Waterfront, and introducing James Dean with East of Eden and Warren Beatty with Splendor in the Grass.

He made other great movies as well,...
