Once upon a time, truck-based SUVs were large families' only alternative to minivans. Today, these rigs offer space and might -- at a fuel economy penalty. Families that don't tow toys should look at car-based crossovers instead. Those that do tow will find the King Ranch's opulent interior materials to be more sophisticated than those of the Toyota Sequoia Platinum, Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator -- for thousands of dollars less. Pros: Body-on-frame platform provides rugged ability to tow heavy loads, excellent navitainment suite, absolutely gorgeous King Ranch saddle leather interior. Cons: Body-on-frame platform means a rougher ride and less fuel economy than car-based alternatives, lack of cohesive-color lighting robs interior of an easy dash of cachet, no 12-volt power point in center console
