Product Description

Steven Spielberg's 1941 is a big-budget zany comedy detailing the hilarious panic that gripped Los Angeles after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Army General Joseph Stilwell (Robert Stack) is in charge of protecting the Californian coastline in the weeks following Pearl Harbor. Dan Aykroyd and John Candy are members of a tank crew responsible for setting up a cannon in Ned Beatty's backyard. As explosions burst forth and air-raid sirens scream, John Belushi, Tim Matheson, and Treat Williams are part of the army corp reacting to the news of war with a somewhat energetic craziness. They dance at the USO, compete with each other to get the prettiest girls, and watch as Hollywood Boulevard becomes a pile of ruins. The film features cameos by many Spielberg friends and associates, including directors Sam Fuller and John Landis and actors James Caan, Mickey Rourke, Penny Marshall, and Susan Backlinie, reprising her famous skinny-dip from the first scene in JAWS. 1941 -- A Comedy? Directed by Steven Spielberg (Lean And Mean III Review)

Date of Review:  Dec 15, 2004
The Bottom Line: 1941 was a film with a good idea at its center, that was made terribly. Bad acting coupled with bad writing was a killer here.
Review: Some movies have a hard time trying to stick with a specific theme, or genre when they are planned for an audience. In the case of 1941, we have a film that at the time, may have seemed fitting, but since then, has become a drab mix of failed comedy...

Unjustly trashed comedy classic.

Review: One of the most satisfying things about reviewing movies is that you get to defend the ones you love. Steven Spielberg's 1941 is a film that has been ridiculed, vilified and just plain hated since it was released in 1979. Yes, it's way overdone and...

1941: Attempt to create a madcap war spoof becomes Spielberg's Folly

Date of Review:  Mar 7, 2009
The Bottom Line: Over the years, many filmmakers have made great comedies set during World War II. Unfortunately, 1941 is not one of them.
Review: If we look at every current successful Hollywood director's filmography, we are bound to find several failed projects or "could have been contender" films that, for some reason or another, failed both critically and popularly at the box...

Spectacular is certainly the word for this utterly wild comedy epic directed by Steven Spielberg and nominated for three Academy Awards. Lavish effects sequences highlight this hilarious all-star extravaganza set in Los Angeles just days after the attack on Pearl Harbor when fear of a Japanese invasion threw the city into a state of Pandemonium. Screwball characters run wild on Hollywood Boulevard as manic servicemen zealous store owners teary-eyed girls and bickering Nazis are thrown together in this fast-rising comic souffle that even features a sendup of Spielberg's own Jaws opening.
