A sci-fi cult classic from 1967, The Prisoner follows the paranoid, mind-bending adventures of a secret agent (Partrick McGoohan) who has been imprisoned for what he knows. The British agent, known only as Number 6, looks to retire from the world of spooks, but he finds himself trapped in the eerily cheerful "Village." In this Orwellian retirement home for persons with classified information, the residents are brainwashed until they smile like zombies as they're coerced to reveal their secrets. The mystery of "to whom?" drives this series like David Jansen's pursuit of the one-armed man in The Fugitive. Number 6 is no common prisoner. He's weirdly skillful in that way British secret agents are in movies and TV, and he pits his indomitable will against the devious tactics of his anonymous keepers. In each episode a new nemesis assumes the role of Number 2, the Village warden, presenting Number 6 with new temptations and pitfalls in the hopes of crushing his spirit or tempting his tongue.
