I have both purchased items from the store, and worked there for a short time. I was just a seasonal CSR, and not connected to the company in any way. They treat their people and customers exceptionally well. With the huge volume of orders they are bound to make some mistakes. However they have a large number of telephone representatives and are easy to reach by phone.
Their main focus is selling unique products that are no longer carried. Most of their customers LOVE them for doing this. The vast majority of their customers are really high-class and constantly mention how much they love the Vermont Country Store. Their price is a little higher, but they are not trying to be Wal-Mart. If you are looking to comparison shop, you completely don't get what they do.
I find it rather upsetting to see them get trashed on this forum, when they are such quality people. They are human and make mistakes, but they are very honest people, and run a great business. It wouldn't have grown this big and popular if they really were this bad, I don't feel that this forum is indicative of the overall customer satisfaction rate. After all, most of their customers are really old and can't even use a computer.
