AWFUL CUSTOMER SERVICE AFTER THE FACT

I purchased a pair of Stride Rite sneakers for my daughter.  After only about 10 weeks of normal wear the sole of one shoe came unglued from the upper from the toe to almost half-way down the shoe, and the other shoe was coming unglued at the toe also.  I called their customer service, which was very friendly and helpful, and was told that I could return the shoes as being defective and get a refund.  HOWEVER, THAT DID NOT HAPPEN. They ended up sending the shoes back to me with no explanation so I called customer service again.  They again were very friendly on the phone and to paraphrase said 'Gee that should not have happened. I will get them to take another look and reconsider the refund.'  Their refusal to refund was based on the fact that the shoes had been worn, were dirty, and were not returned in the original box.  DUH - I has already established that fact with the girl on the phone before I returned them! After several days I received an email - again refusing the refund.  Again - based on the same criteria that the shoes had been worn and I did not have the original box.  The customer service reps on the phone said that did not matter - but when it came down to it, whoever was making the decision refused to stand by what I was told - not once but twice!  I suppose if the shoes you buy don't fall apart you will be happy with them. BUT if you have a problem like this after the fact you might as well kiss your money goodbye because they don't stand behind their own products!
As a separate note, I had this exact same thing happen a year of so ago with a pair of sneakers I bought for my son from Lands End and when I contacted them about the problem they were very helpful and apologetic and offered an immediate replacement. Since I did not want another pair of the same shoes that fell apart, they let me pick a comparable pair.  I did have to pay up front for the new pair since they were different, but I received prompt credit when they received the return of the pair that fell apart.
