We purchased our Select Comfort 7000 bed at our local store a year ago. I was disappointed that they didn't keep the beds in stock, they ship them to you. Lots of boxes and pieces to put together.
The frame is blow-molded plastic. Looks cheesy, but it's probably as strong as any wooden frame. The instructions were a little confusing, but we finally got it together. There are lots of layers that have to go together in the correct order, and the components are not marked clearly. It did smell the first night, but the smell dissipated in a day or two.
Basically, the Sleep Number bed is a glorified air mattress. A very expensive air mattress at that! The secret to making it comfortable, in my opinion, is not the air mattress at all, but the pillowtop layer above it. I like a very firm mattress. I tried several settings on my bed and settled on the highest number, 100. I wish it would go a little bit firmer. I think I would enjoy sleeping on the floor with just the pillowtop section. The bed is rather tall, making it difficult for our dog to jump up on it (which is a good thing).
The manufacturer says that you can't judge the mattress after a few minutes in the store, or even after one night. We found this to be the case. It took a couple of weeks before we decided that it would work for us.
As other reviews have mentioned, it would be extremely difficult to get this thing back into the original box to return it. Others have complained about poor service. I would recommend that you deal with a local store, even though you would have to return it to the manufacturer if you didn't like it. After looking at the purchase contract, I had reservations because it sure looked like you would have a very difficult time returning the bed if you didn't like it.
I still keep thinking that this is an outrageously priced air mattress, but I really enjoy sleeping on it. My wife and I find it very comfortable. If you think of it in terms of paying for comfort, rather than materials, it's not so bad.
A few months after our purchase, we had the opportunity to sleep on our old mattress, which we had moved to our lake house. It was awful! I can't believe we ever slept on it! We'd buy another Sleep Number bed for the lake house, if we could afford it!
Several of our friends have also purchased the Sleep Number beds. All of them are very happy with them.
