Patagonia as a company has single-handedly redefined what captains of industry can be. Starting small in the early 70's, this small clothing manufacturer has shrugged off all of the common, negative business stereotypes and proved that there is much more to doing business then stepping on others necks to get ahead.
Patagonia has always strove to be much more than their balance sheet. And they are.
They are consistently rated as one of the best companies in the world to work for. And their products speak for themselves. I have a closet full of 15 year old shirts and jackets that I just can't seem to wear out.
They are friends of the environment. I know, that is politically-correct these days, but it stretches far beyond trendy marketing campaigns that call attention to their "PCness". These guys operate their whole business based on environmental impact. How many 9 figure corporations would stop building best sellers because it can't be done "correctly" and with little impact on the environment. This is probably the only one.
They have single handedly created an entire organic cotton industry in the Southwest where none existed before. And through their huge committment to Organic products, they've brought the price of this No-Pesticide cotton to a level where it is cost effective for the Nikes of the world to use in their clothing.
