When I shop for electronics, I like to use a combination approach that includes both stores and internet. I usually start by conducting research online. Then, I head to Best Buy or a similar store to see and try out the item. Finally, I return home, logon to the internet, and check several sites to see if I can get the same item for a lower price. More often than not, the internet wins and one site I have used successfully for finding good deals on electronics is
Newegg.com, an electronics superstore.
What Does This Web Service Offer?: Newegg.com is known for its electronics and related goods. Customers can find things at
Newegg.com in categories such as:
Computer Hardware
General Electronics
PC's and Laptops
Apple/Mac Products
Cell Phones
Digital Cameras
Networking
Gaming
Software
Home Appliances
Newegg.com also has a special offers section with bargain prices. The site also sells gift certificates.
Payment Options/Shipping: Newegg.com accepts the usual credit cards for payment, like Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express. It also accepts PayPal and BillMeLater, as well as personal checks and the
Newegg.com preferred credit account. Shipping is offered by UPS and Fedex with DHL acting as an intermediary, in some instances. The shipping ranges from overnight delivery to three day delivery services offered by both Fedex and UPS.
Final Thoughts: Newegg.com is an electronics superstore and it ranks among the better electronics stores on the internet. I have been using
Newegg.com on and off for many years, both as a product resource site and as a place to make purchases. This electronics store offers a large selection that has grown over the years and now includes item categories that are not electronic in nature.
My earliest experiences with
Newegg.com were to use it as a product resource center and I still like to consult
Newegg.com for this purpose. The product information is very thorough and it includes all sorts of information- more than most other electronics sites and more than most shoppers will expect to find. When you browse for items,
Newegg.com will present them in a list, complete with a quick summary of the item, the price, a summary of consumer ratings, and a place to click to add the item to your cart. But this isn't the extent of the product information. Just click the name of the item and you will be taken to a product information screen that will tell you every piece of information imaginable. Not only will you know the product specifications, you will also be able to view multiple images (top, front, left side, right side, etc.) of the product, find a link to the manufacturer's home page, find a phone number for customer support, read product reviews, find information on product rebates, and even take a "product tour", which is like a magazine article/summary of the product and what it offers.
Product searches with
Newegg.com are very good and the site is designed in a way that makes it intuitive and geared toward the customer.
Newegg.com wants to help you find exactly what you want and, hopefully, convert you into another satisfied customer.
Newegg.com allows sorting of search results multiple ways (highest price, lowest price, highest rated, etc.) and it also lets you select multiple products for a side- by- side review. In order to get to the comparison tool, you need to first select the option to "See All" selections. Once here, you can make quick comparions to find the product that best suits your needs.
Product selection is very good at this site. Did you realize that you can purchase a set of cookware or a microwave oven at
Newegg.com? Or power tools? Or an inflatable air mattress? These and other out of the ordinary products are now sold at
Newegg.com, but buyers should beware that these categories do not offer the greatest product selection, nor do they offer great prices. The electronics deals are very good and very competitive, but I don't think I would waste my time shopping at
Newegg.com for a new refrigerator. The prices are not that great and, worst of all, there is practically no selection.
Shipping is efficient with
Newegg.com and it is one of the few electronics web services that have shipped my order in the alloted time frame. One thing that I wish was different with
Newegg.com shipping is its lack of a free shipping option. I am pretty sure I have seen this option in the past but it was apparently a special offer. I would like to see an offer that makes shipping free if you purchase over a specified level- similar to what you find in many other web sites. But the shipping cost isn't too bad as long as you select the UPS 3 Day option.
Speaking of the shipping, one thing I like about
Newegg.com is that it lets you select your preferred shipping, enter your zip code to calculate the cost, and then lets you open up the drop down menu showing the different shipping options to see the cost of the other choices. You don't have to re- enter your zip code and select a different option, one by one. You can quickly make a price comparison and select the option that is most reasonable and practical for you. Based on my experience, the Fedex Overnight option is the costliest while the UPS Guaranteed 3- Day Service is the cheapest. Fedex also offers a three- day delivery option, but UPS is less expensive for my area. The only other cost component to a
Newegg.com order is possible sales cost. If your order is shipped to California, Tennessee, or New Jersey, expect to have sales tax added to the bill. Other states are sales tax free.
Overall, I have found
Newegg.com to be a very pleasant electronics shopping experience and it ranks among a handful of electronics sites that I have visited more than once. I was once so discouraged with electronics web sites that I almost gave up on them for good and switched to brick and mortar stores for my electronics needs. But
Newegg.com has restored my confidence in electronics shopping online. A well- thought out site, good prices, excellent product information, and a good product selection make
Newegg.com one of the best in its class.
