When my magazine subscriptions are about to expire I often shop around online and, if I can, I make my purchases through point-giving websites. I went through
Memolink to renew my subscription to Smithsonian through
Magazineline.com.
Their homepage is a little slow to load, but once it does you can see categories to select from on the left, top sellers and some images of the magazines in the middle, and most importantly a search box at the top.
I searched for Smithsonian and found it was $12. It was easy select to buy it for yourself (and then chose a new or renewal subscription) or as a gift. I like the renewal option because then you are less likely to get duplicate copies of the magazine if the publisher assumes its a new subscription.
You can also log into your account and check on your order and easily renew your subscriptions previously ordered through their site.
Their prices seem very competitive. It was the lowest price I found for the magazine I was looking for. Plus there are no taxes or shipping charges, since it is a magazine.
For payment methods they accept visa, mastercard, discover, amex, as well as online checks. They also have an option for bill me later.
I placed my order on 5/1 and received an email shortly after that verified and thanked me for the order and let me know I should receive my first magazine in 6-10 weeks. I then received a confirmation every day after that for 7 more days. I emailed them asking them what was going on and they said they were aware of the problem, I had only ordered once, and apologized for the inconvenience.
My card was charged on 5/4. However I did not receive my first issue until 2 days ago. This was more than 12 weeks after I placed my order.
Due to the slowness of the website, the email problems I had with them, and the length of time it took to receive my first issue I don't believe I will order with them again. I did eventually receive my magazine and my subscription doesn't expire until 7/08 so I am still getting a full year subscription, it just meant I missed an issue before it renewed and I wish I had received it.
